How to Become Motivated for a Home Move

Set achievable targets and then reward yourself for a job well done

We will not do any room-by-room packing list, no packing checklists, and we are not even going to show you how to efficiently pack to move, (although if you want to learn how to do that just visit our home moving blog which is packed with tips on packing for a home move).

What we will do first, however, is prepare your home for packing, we will do this in bite-sized chunks, and we will achieve big results in very little time, whilst saving some money to boot.

Win, Win, and Win.

Decluttering is one of the most crucial aspects of home moving, so even if you are overwhelmed with the prospect of packing to move home, this is a task that cannot be ignored.

In fact, your lack of enthusiasm for packing may be a huge bonus in the decluttering process, as you will be inclined to dispose of things rather than have to pack them.

So come on then, let’s start with these 3 small tentative steps on our home moving adventure.

A little progress each day adds up to big results.

  1. Crank up the radio, because music makes the world a better place!
  2. Grab a roll of rubbish sacks.
  3. Head for the easiest room in the house to pack.

That was painless, wasn’t it? Now for our next 3 steps.

We are going to declutter one room at a time, so choose an easy room first.

Less clutter means less to pack, which means less to transport to your new home, which means lower removal costs.

But you will need to be ruthless to gain the maximum benefit from this process. By starting in the easiest room first, you will experience a huge morale boost by completing your first room.

  1. Make a pile of all the things you want to throw out.
  2. The second pile will have all the things that you can donate to charity or give away.
  3. Another pile will have everything you want to sell.

All that remains now is to pack the items that you are definitely going to take to your new home.

How to Pack a Room to Move. Quick and Easy Packing Tips

Leave hanging clothes on their hangers and just slip them into some strong rubbish sacks

Here are some easy and quick tips for packing your things.

Getting just a few boxes packed will motivate you to the next step and then the next and before you know it your first room will be finished.

  • Leave clothes that are in wardrobes on hangers. Just slip bin liners over the hangers as you would a suit carrier. Job done.
  • Anything that remains in drawers can stay there. They can be transported to your new home as they are. Another job ticked off.
  • Books can be packed in the smaller boxes you have so that they are not too heavy to move.
  • Blankets and duvets can go in the larger boxes or rubbish sacks as they are nice and light.

Don’t forget to label every box clearly, with the destination room marked on the outside of the box.

This will ensure that the unloading and unpacking process is so much easier.

If the contents are fragile, remember to mark the box as ‘fragile’, or ‘this was up’, as appropriate.

You may also like to read: How to Label Moving Boxes. In this guide, we share an easy way to label your moving boxes so that you know which room they belong to in your new home and the order in which they need unpacking.

That’s it then.

Your first room is packed, and how to start packing to move out is answered!

And surely you must feel a little motivated at least by reaching your first goal?

Now repeat each easy step in the next room.

Do this step by step, one task at a time, with each part of the process a goal easily reached.

Don’t forget to take the items that you are going to dispose of to the recycling centre or charity shops in manageable trips.

As you progress onto each room, you can pack those items that you want to take with you but are not being used now, for example, seasonal clothing and ornaments.

The items that you will be using before moving day can be packed last.

On the days when you feel really motivated and full of energy, tackle the hardest rooms, when you are not brimming over with motivation and energy head for the easier rooms.

Are you in ‘I can’t be bothered to pack for my home move’ mode?
